You need to register the new bub in 60 days

Don’t worry if you haven't – we’re here to help. You can phone us on 13 77 88.
Let us know if you want your enquiry handled by an indigenous staff member.

How to register your bub

When the bub arrives in the hospital, the nurse or or midwife will give you a Birth Registration Statement (BRS).

Fill this out and attach photocopies of both parents’ identity documents.
There is an enclosed reply paid envelope to mail it to the NSW Registry of Births Deaths & Marriages.

You can also lodge your BRS in person at one of our registry offices or at a Service NSW office

Registry of Births Deaths & Marriages offices are located at 35 Regent Street Chippendale and 160 Marsden Street Parramatta (8am to 4.30pm Monday to Friday).

Do I have to apply for a birth certificate for the new bub?

The most important thing is to register your bub. You can apply for a birth certificate any time.

Birth certificates show evidence of age, place of birth and parents’ details to help with: education, trave, legal and financial matters, government benefits and allowances and other entitlements and services.

There will be a small cost for the bub’s birth certificate ($53 including delivery by registered mail)
