Tuning in to Kids Term 2
Tuning in to Kids consists of six interactive group sessions for parents. It can also be delivered individually. It is an evidence-based parenting program that focuses on the emotional connection between parents and children. It coaches parents to help their child to understand and manage their feelings. It helps parents to understand their child’s emotions and guide their child’s behaviour with appropriate limits. Parents learn simple emotion coaching skills to recognise, understand and respond to children’s emotions in an accepting, supportive way. This approach helps the child and parent to understand and manage their emotions and improve parent-child connection. When parents learn these parenting skills, their child’s behaviour, emotional management and social skills improve.
The program integrates aspects of attachment theory, emotion-focussed, cognitive behavioural therapy, mindfulness, child development theories and the neuroscience on brain-behaviour relationships. Specific changes expected in program participants include: Increased parent emotion awareness and regulation; increased emotional competence in children; decreased emotional and behavioural difficulties in children and improved parent-child connection.
Target Group: All families with children 3 – 11 years. It is for parents/carers of preschoolers and school aged children. This program has been used with families experiencing emotional stress and with foster families.
